Daniel Sharygin, Newburgh IN, won the USTA National Level 3 Boys 16s in January 2017. This marks one of many national events Daniel has won over the years. This was was paticulary special as it was here in Evansville. The Evansville Tennis Center is the first facility in Evansville history to host a USTA National Junior Tournament. Daniel paired up with another local standout, Aaron Thompson for doubles. The two won advanced to the quarterfinal round before losing to 4th seeded Matthew Halpin and Henry Ruger 8-5.
Daniel, who trains at both ETC and Tri-State Athletic Club, entered the tournament as the third highest ranked player. Daniel cruised through his first two match winning 6-4,6-2 and 6-2,6-0 respectfully. His quarterfinal opponent would end up being his partner, Aaron Thompson. After a tight 7-6(5) first set Daniel won the second set 6-1, advancing to the semifinals.
On the third day of the tournament Daniel defeated top ranked Matthew Halpin 7-6(2), 6-2. In the final match of the tournament Daniel managed to battle and win a close one 7-6(2), 7-5 against number 7 seed Graydon Lair (Tulsa, OK).
